Copper Learns A Lesson

03.12.05

So I get a call from my sister while I’m at the shop here. A gunshot went off at the neighbors, and sent Copper flyin to the house all shook up. He’s a big sissy when it comes to guns. Anyways, when he arrives, he has a nose full of quills. Ouch. But I think the neighbor blasted the culrpit.

So I grab some needle nose pliers and the camera. This outta be fun.

Now copper is a mighty ornery hound dog, so I’m sure he deserved every last quill he got. But he’s a bit older, and pretty easy going. I know the Marshal woulda been goin crazy, but Copper took it like a champ.

So while I sat on him with the pliers in one hand and his snout in the other, my old man held his head still. Then I moved in for the pull. ouch, and more ouch.

Oh it hurt, but he handled it alot better than most dogs. There were about nine total, but we couldent find one after I pulled it and dropped it. Me and the old man were laughin at him most the time, because Copper deserved it very much. After that last one, I swabbed his nose up with some peroxide and neosporin, then we gave him a peice of ham to make it all better. After that he just stretched around on the floor, and didn’t want to leave… Kinda reminded me of the dog, Chief, from Fox and the Hound. When he had that busted leg, and acted all wounded just so he could stay in the house and get sympathy… only I knew better.

So, hopefully he learned his lesson. But I woulden’t be surprised if he haden’t. You know them hound dogs.

that’s a tuff break, but you said he handled it well, so that’s good, but you’re right, he’ll prorbably do it again.

Poor baby! You should be more sympathetic Chad! You said, “Knowledge is power.” So he was taking your advice! He was only trying to learn about porcupines. Moral? Don’t try to teach your dog life lessons.

    haha. Pam… you kill me.

If he was a smart dog he’d learn by observation. That is true wisdom. But dogs are just dumb animals… so no chance of that happening.

Well, I guess you have a point, but give him some credit. At least he probably won’t do it again. People are just as bad, and they tend to not learn that lesson from each mistake. Even when they see that something hurts or has the potential to be disasterous they try it or keep doing it anyway. Like doing drugs, or falling in love the wrong kind of guy/girl, or staying in an abusive relationship. Maybe we should be more animal-ish and follow our instincts. Then life might be a little less painful.

I had a pet funnel web spider in a large jar for a while that my wife dug up in the garden. But it stank after a while so I got rid of it. Highly aggressive but terrified of the roaches that I tried to feed it (courtesy of the local Chines restaurant). I had to wound the roaches before the spider would attack them …

[...] Memories we’ve had together flooded my mind as I drove to the woods with copper laying next to me on the bench seat. Like that time he came to the front door with his face full of porcupine quills. Or all the various dead critters he’d bring home to chew. Or how he’d follow Jeff’s horses around a bit too close, and old Oreo gave him a clean hoof to the ribs. That taught him a good lesson. Or that time that me and Erik were headed to downtown Cd’A, and Copper had his front paws up on the side of the truck bed, as I went over a pothole. His paws slipped forward, and over the edge he went. I could see him rolling along side the truck, half on the sidewalk, and half off. I’ll bet that smarts. Good thing I was only going 25. But he never did climb up on the bed wall again. [...]
