Christians & Guns

04.24.2005

NRA Jesus

Jeff Quinn wrote this piece over at Gunblast.com. I figger it’d make for a great sunday lesson.

I have been asked on occasion how I can justify carrying a gun and being a Christian at the same time. This is always posed by someone who is trying to trip me up. It can either be a devout Christian asking the question, or a Hedonistic heathen; it doesn’t matter. There are those who believe, or choose to believe, that a Christian must be absolutely passive in all things. I am not just referring to those Christians who ride a horse and buggy. I have been asked about my views on self defense by Christians of most every denomination. Some are genuinely seeking an answer. Others just want to chastise me for not being as “faithful” as themselves.

Many will accept every modern worldly convenience, but scoff at the idea of trying to protect oneself or the life of another. Their attitude seems to be that “God will protect us”. They do have a valid point. God will protect us from the evils of this world, if he so chooses. I would rather have God on my side than a battery of Sidewinder missiles. Indeed, our God can protect us. However, that attitude would lead one to believe that he could walk through Harlem wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit campaigning for George Wallace, and that “God will protect us”. God could get you through that, but Jesus said that we should not tempt God. I tend to agree with his assessment.

In the saddlebag of my motorcycle, I have a tiny cross with the inscription “Faith Moves Mountains”, but I also ride in the mountains of East Tennessee and the western United States, and I make sure that my brakes are in good working order. I could just trust God to catch me, but again, that could be construed as tempting God. God gave us brakes on our motorcycles, and that is sufficient.

God can indeed protect us. He can keep us safe on the highways, and he can also keep us safe from those who would intentionally do us harm. I am not speaking of politicians here, but of the evil that is in the souls of some human beings. Be certain in this; there is true evil in this world, and it sometimes manifests itself in the form of a low life predator. Being a Christian, it is difficult to believe that people, made of the same composition of flesh, bone, and blood as ourselves, could be truly evil. We have a Heavenly Father who has filled us with basic goodness, but Jesus said that there are those “who are of the synagogue of Satan”.

No sane individual would hesitate to defend himself from a rabid dog or a poisonous snake, but are the two-legged vipers of this world any better than an animal? An animal does that which comes naturally to him. Children of Satan do that which comes naturally to them: that being evil.

Can God protect us from those who would do us harm? Absolutely. However, just as he has given us brakes to save us from the mountain, he has also given to us the tools necessary to defend ourselves, and those whom God has given to us. As Christian men, God not only allows us to protect our families, but he expects us to protect those whom he has placed in our care. This may seem contrary to the mandate for us to “turn the other cheek”, and I too have pondered over this. It takes great strength to turn the other cheek as Jesus intended. That is not a commandment to be weak. Jesus did not operate from a position of weakness. In fact, nothing ever happened to him that he did not allow.

God has entrusted us with the care of our brothers, whether those “brothers” be the children that he has given to us, or our wives, or our friends. We could set our children outside in the cold and trust that God would keep them warm. We could abandon them and trust that God will keep them fed. We could let them loose on the city streets or send them off for a week at Neverland, and trust that no sick, evil freak would abuse them. As Christians, we do not do these things to our children. God expects us to clothe them, feed them, and protect them from the evil that is inherent in this world. He gave to us the ability to buy clothes, grow food, build a fire, and to fight off those who would do us harm. In the time that Jesus walked the Earth in the form of man, the short sword was the state-of-the-art weapon. He told his followers that the time of living carefree was over, and that the time had come for those without a sword to “sell his garment and buy one”.

Today, we have better than a sword. We have more modern weapons at our disposal, and so does our enemy. Keeping a good rifle to defend one’s homestead and a reliable handgun to ward off evil that finds you when you least expect it is not only prudent, but expected. A Christian man is not mean, hateful, spiteful, or quick to anger. Neither is he weak. God never told us to let the evil in this world run over us like a train. He never told us to stand by idly as those whom he trusted to us are abused or killed. A Christian man who packs a gun does not look for trouble, and avoids it if at all possible. However, evil can seek you out.

A well-armed man operates from a position of strength. He is less likely to have to fight than an unarmed man. The predators in this world look for easy prey. God did not put his people on this Earth to be prey for the sons of Satan. God expects us to stand up for what is right, and he gives us the tools with which to do so. When you defend the life of one of God’s children, you are defending good against evil. Use your good sense and God’s word to avoid trouble. If necessary, use the gun at your side to stand against it.

So my last phone contract expired, and I decided to upgrade things around here.

I got me a fancy camera phone, that has video as well. So you might see a few photos that I’ll snap here and there. Now if only I can figure out how to post pictures directly from the phone. That would be mighty hi-tech.

Here’s another of my folks sideyard this morning.

Taking Up Your Cross

04.20.2005

If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.

Nothing can direct your life like the words of Jesus Christ. I rest on the firm foundation of His word as much as I can and fear no change in the tides of man due to the fact that I am on the Rock! Let me share with you my thoughts on this verse:

“If anyone wishes to come after Me,” Right away we know that Jesus is now speaking to His disciples and future disciples, or in other words, anyone who wants to be His follower, here’s how to follow Him.

“let him deny himself”. What does it mean to deny one’s self? Is it the action of self denial or is that different? When I am telling myself that I cannot endulge in something, that is self denial… it is the act of saying no to my desires. I propose to you that this is not what denial of self is. If it was then our power over sin would reside in our ability to say no to our desires and let me tell you something… I’m the one who gets myself into the messes that I would have to say no to. I can’t do it on my own. If we study the plight of the Israelites, they always got into trouble when they thought they could do it on their own. Joshua’s army got defeated hardcore by a little city called Ai right after they blasted down the mighty fotress of Jericho. You know why? It’s because they did not seek the LORD’s will in the matter but sought to use their own power to defeat Ai. Bottom line, if we seek to follow the Lord in obedience in our own power, we will fail. So how do we deny self? I’ll tell you through two authoritative examples. 1) The Word of Jesus: But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you. Matt 6:33 Read you Bible so your mind will be transformed and pray so that your heart will be reformed and as you seek His kingdom first, He will be faithful to transform you. 2) The Word of the Apostles- If we confess our sins, He will be faithful and just to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. What good news this is. No longer must I worry about my struggle with sin, for He will take care of it.

“take up his cross daily”. To take up ones cross would be easy if the word daily was not put into the sentance. One could easily rationalize taking up the cross as becoming a Christian and in that way sharing in the death of our sins once and for all. But that Jesus is a wise fellow. He knew us better then than we know ourselves now. Lets analyze why he used the word daily. We as humans have a great problem with complacency. First 100 times I went to Disneyland, it was the greatest place on earth. Now on trip 2,568 its no longer as fun. Same is true of Christianity. When we first become Christians, we jump for joy at now being a child of God, and at day 2,568 we complain about our “family chores”. God knowing this, realized that if man does not put to death his worldly man daily, that man would grow stronger and drag Him down. Paul calls us as Christians to put aside all things that may trip us up, as if we were running a race. When we run a race we don’t worry about how bills are going to be paid or what our boss said to us today… we are only concerned about winning the race. What God wants us to do is to daily (preferably in the morning) crucify the earthly desires/concerns that could eventually trip us in the race. These concerns could be the traditional things like lust and pride all the way to little things like watching the ball game instead of going to church. (Nothing against ball games, but ultimately whats more important?) Imagine every morning you taking that desire that is not yearning for God and nailing it up to a cross. Every hammer stroke you fall pins that desire to the death it deserves and ultimately you are crucifing the part of you that deserves to die.

“follow Me.” Then when we have prepared ourselves, we can then follow the Lord… but not before. Its like if a militia called you up and said, “Hey, get your gun and cammies and meet here at 1300 hours.” and you went to meet them without you gun or cammies. In order to be a disciple of Christ’s you need to do the previous things He commanded. Then when those are done on a daily basis you can begin to follow Him. God Bless you all.

Send In The SWAT Monkey!

04.20.2005

“Send in the SWAT monkey” is not an order US police commanders are accustomed to giving but that could soon change.

The police department at Mesa, Arizona, is examining a proposal to train a capuchin monkey for high-risk police operations.

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) veteran Sean Truelove has researched the possibility of landing a $US100,000 federal grant to fund a pilot program to train one monkey.

Mr Truelove told a local newspaper the test monkey could be trained to unlock doors and search buildings on command.

“Everybody laughs about it until they really start thinking about it,” Mr Truelove told the East Valley Tribune.

“It could change the way we do business.”

Major city police departments in the United States use paramilitary SWAT teams for hostage situations and in situations involving heavily armed criminals. Full story…

Oh this should be really good. Wait till Frank J finds out about it. Monkeys are his worst enemy. Especially if they are on a SWAT team.
