The Coyote Problem
09.25.05Lately a good fer nothin’ coyote has been creeping around my folks house. They have these 3 little weiner dogs, and the coyote has been eyeballing them for quite some time.
Thursday night, he came over to the yard and got in a scrap, with the Marshal, over a dead rabbit. The Marshal ran him off, but he took some nasty gashes in his front legs. He’s healing up fine, he has just been favoring that front leg for the past couple days.
So saturday night, my brother in law, Jarrid and I hear the coyote yippin in the woods just across our street. We lock ‘n’ load, and head out that way. Only thing is… it’s too dark to see anything. But he was close, from the sound of it. We tried using the dead rabbit that Marshal Dillon had won as bait on the side of the road. We also had my rig’s headlights and a floodlamp handy. We were hoping he’d venture out of the brush for it, while I laid on the call. No luck.
Sunday evening just before dusk, I manage to shoot a rabbit in the folks yard using the .223 with JHP’s. Very messy. As I climbed into the brush to retreive the varmint, I managed to get guts from a branch to behind my ear. Nice and warm too. Then we headed out to the woods to set a trap. Using the rabbit carcas and a stick, we set it up in a clearing so the rabbit appeared to be sticking it’s head above a rock.
Then Jarrid and I hunkered low in the high brush, and waited. No sign after sitting still for 45 minutes. So we head back to the house while thinkin of cage traps. This sucker needs to die.

Man that rabbit looks… erm, broken. Shame, I likes me rabbit pie.

# September 26th, 2005 at 5:55 amCmon Chad ya wanna b able to eat it after ya kill it.
# September 26th, 2005 at 9:24 amHaha oops I missed the part where you didnt kill it.
# September 26th, 2005 at 11:37 amChad- What you need is good distress call, like a dying rabbit, wounded quail, etc. Swing by a good hunt’n shop, pick one up, then call that ‘yote in and blast that sucker. Then, post pictures of the beast on your site. And send me a shirt for the idea. Large should be about right…!
I’ve outsmarted quite few coyotes with a dying/injured rabbit call. Coyote numbers are really up out here in Kentucky, but I do what can to help keep the numbers under control.
# September 27th, 2005 at 7:07 pmYea, I’ve been using a rabbit distress call. He aint taking it though.
# September 27th, 2005 at 9:36 pmI might have to try that Rabbit-on-a-stick trick.
# September 28th, 2005 at 8:32 amI was actually thinkin about skinning a rabbit and makin a permanent dummy. Then putting it on a spring base, and having some string to pull on it and have it bob back and forth to grab attention.
I saw something similar on OLN when this guy was coyote hunting with a long bow. Which is crazy, by the way.
# September 28th, 2005 at 8:39 amDid he get it?
# September 29th, 2005 at 11:27 amNo he didnt. They couldent get the varmint in close enough, so they had to take it with a rifle.
# September 29th, 2005 at 3:06 pmI remember that, didn’t the guide who insisted on shooting it then go and miss it?
# September 29th, 2005 at 8:34 pmThats a big gun for a little bunny…
# September 30th, 2005 at 3:00 amNaw just about perfect, the gun itself isnt all that large the bullet is smaller than a gun that small should shoot.
# September 30th, 2005 at 9:51 amI might be able to talk you through this….read my article on hunting cyotes(on my web site) then e-mail me with any questions. Buy the way this coyote is just one of many!
