It seems no matter how hard the plain, good ol’ white folk try to acknowledge and denounce the unfortunate past of our country that includes slavery, no matter how hard they try to forget about it and get on with life, there’s always somebody(usually an “african-american”) that wants to keep bringing it to the forefront. Seeing how the black culture is not only accepted but celebrated these days, and slavery itself was in fact abolished long ago, the only motivation I can see behind the continued brow-beating of whitey is for that almighty dollar… that and so black racists can continue to rub “cracker’s” nose in it, just like their great, great, great, great grandaddy wished he could have at the time. What happened between everybody’s ancestors was between them, not the people that alive, here and now. I understand that slavery needs to never be forgotten and to never happen again, but leave it in the history books where history belongs, because that’s exactly what it is…history. People!!! No matter what your skin color, GET OVER IT!!! There is not one white person alive today that had ANYTHING to do with the unfortunate period of slavery in this country. I’m sick and friggin’ tired of guys like Spike Lee and Al Sharpton beating me over the head with the “racism” card. They should look in the mirror before they start throwing the term “racist” around.

    BWAAA HAHAHAAAA! What a maroon!

Another classic circular argument- this is like the israelis and palestinians shouting at each other about “who started it”. Each side has their list of complaints that they harp on endlessly, while urging the other side to “get over” whatever complaints they have. I honestly couldn’t care less who’s the bigger racist, or who thinks their being descriminated against. The simple fact is that, if a white male American want to make a good life for himself, and is willing to work hard, and fairly intelligent, he can do so. what more can you ask for? whether the same can be said for a black male is debatable. Besides who the hell are you to decide when racism against blacks is no longer a problem? Similarly, who are blacks to decide when things are too easy for “whitey”?

As a white, do I feel responsible for slavery? No, my family wasn’t even here when it ended. Do I feel responsible for the continuing and glaring political, social and economics imbalances between black and white in this country? You bet, and so should you.

  4. Gravatar Brettski Says

Geeze Heath, if you’re gonna call a guy a “maroon”, you oughta be decent enough to explain yourself. At least Whatever managed a somewhat thought out, if not misguided reply. Now if he would only actually read what I said, I’d bother to offer a rebuttal. What the hell am I supposed to do with a one liner that was plagiarised from Bugs Bunny?

  5. Gravatar Chad Says

I’m not entirely sure, but I think heath might have been referring to the guy making the movie. :???:

  6. Gravatar Brettski Says

That thought did occur, but because it’s not unusual for me to recieve negative reactions to my opinionated rants at other sites, I erred on the side of self-defense . If that is the case, then I humbly apologize to Heath for my jumping to conclusions and will know better in the future  Thanks for that Chad.

Brettski, I’m curious: what do you think is “misguided” about my response? I agreed with your notion that blacks do their fair share of the racist talk. In fact, I would say the most damaging kind of black racism is when an intelligent, ambitious, and studious black kid is told by his friends and family to “quit acting white”. This defeatist attitude certainly contributes to the ongoing troubles that blacks face. The notion seems to be that, if a black kid cannot succeed through sports, rap, etc, he or she should not succeed at all.

Still, I can’t believe that you would deny that white racism against blacks is also fairly prevalent. I too find the burden of being politically correct all the time irritating, but that is to be expected.

I’m curious what you guys think of affirmative action, which I would say is, on balance, a good thing.

  10. Gravatar Stevil Says

Hey isnt “maroon” race related? Why, yes it is…

I feel Native-Americans were the most persecuted in our nation’s history from being stripped of their land, almost-killed off, and still being taken advantage off by having their known reservations and land promised to them being taken from them by developers.

Blacks were shipped over here…..most were treated fairly by their masters and had a greater chance to learn (as compared to learning in their native-Africa)…I do grant that many were killed, however the number was small compared to the Native American and are they being mistreated today like the American Indian today? No, because the liberals would expose it. So thats my 2 cents..PEACE BROTHERS

  12. Gravatar me Says

Actually the south didnt want the whole country, just their states, unlike the cover of the movie suggests.

  13. Gravatar Whatever Says

Anthony- the issue is not who was more mistreated. this is not an abuse taking contest. and your assertion that the blacks were treated “fairly” is frankly bull. i’m not even going to go into detail, but read some history books- being whipped, chain, starved, killed, sold to the highest bidder like a side of ham, and forced into labor with only enough food and water to keep you alive for the next day is not by any measure fair. perhaps what you meant to say is that what happened to the native americans is worse, and that may be true, but don’t use the word “fair” to describe the treatment of african slaves. The idea that they had opportunities to learn is also untrue, blacks were strctly prohibited form owning books, etc. lest they become “too smart” and try to escape. I don’t know what you call being taken advantage of, but i think that qualifies.

  14. Gravatar anthony Says

i know this issue isn’t about who was the most abused…i just felt likestating my opinion and to indirectly state that the blacks should stop using the race card like they were the only ones mistreated. I’ll admit my use of the word “fair” was an overstatement dealing the pain and misery they experienced. BUT, it was used as an comparison to the mistreatment of the Native Americans.

PS…not every owner was a sadistic, slave owner (ie as displayed in Uncle Tom’s cabin)….many of the women were treated as servants and given skills and a place to live. IE Thomas Jefferson for an example

  15. Gravatar Whatever Says

Point taken, but does the fact that the blacks are not the only ones to be heinously abused and slaughtered make their experience less important? as i said before, i do not feel any direct responsibility for slavery, because i and my ancestors had nothing to do with, but one must also recognize that blacks today are not treated “fairly” either… Now I hate it just as much as anyone when I hear some of my ultra-liberal classmates talking about how everything bad is America’s fault, etc. but one must recognize the country’s past deeds, good and bad. Why not let spike lee make a movie speculating about how the country would be different had the confederates won the war? Is anyone forcing you to see it? Are liberals forced to watch Fox News? NO. so don’t complain about. In fact, I think I will go and see this movie: perhaps it is not as simple as this advertizing campaign would suggest.

  16. Gravatar Idle Hour Says

There are plenty of examples of slaves who were set free in their owners’ wills. Sometimes they were even left small farms of their own, or given pensions in their owners’ wills. The idea that all slave owners used only whips, chains, and brutality when dealing with their slaves is wrong, although doubtless some owners were exceedingly cruel. That doesn’t make slavery right, of course, but slavery was not a uniquely American institution. Saudi Arabia didn’t abolish slavery until 1962, for example. And not all slave owners in America were white. In New Orleans, there were black owners of black slaves. Who’s supposed to apologize to who for that?

  17. Gravatar me Says

HAHA! good question! I think they should all appologize to themselves if they really have a problem with what happened 140+ years ago. No one alive today had anything to do with it so why do they think we still discriminate against them. Im not a rascist but I don’t care that blacks aren’t as “succesful” as others, at this point in time, its their fault. Go out and get a freakin job and earn an honest living. Stop looking to the government for free handouts.

    Me,
VERY WELL PUT INDEED. I don’t suppose you’ve ever studied basic economics, or thought about this very hard, but if you had, you’d soon come to realize that poverty is what is known as a vicious cycle. Perhaps you’re familiar with the phrase “the poor get poorer, and the rich get richer.” Well, believe it or not, it’s true!!! OMG!

Why? Well, poor people have a difficult time affording the things necessary to become rich. The most obvious example is higher education. A black boy or girl from East St. Louis or Watts can’t just say “gee, i’d sure like to be a lawyer, maybe I should go to university” or “hmm, i think i’ll get a fairly paying steady job today” can they? Unless a poor black kid is very lucky, intelligent, or has the ability to, for example, play basketball professionally, they are basically stuck. Now, you’ll probably say “well it’s the same for white people, i worked my way up from x to y on my own, etc.” but the fact is that many more white people start out with much more than the majority of black people (there are exceptions, of course). I do not care to research income statistics or anything, but that is the fact, and you know it.

You seem to think that after a certain amount of time, the inequalities represnted by slavery no longer apply, but when changes on this front are as slow as they have been, it could be 500 years before any form of socioeconomic equality develops.

By the way, choose a country other than Saudi Arabia to compare the US with when you’re trying to show how egalitarian we are. :roll:Traditionalist Islamic kingdoms may be many things, but they are not socially progressive.

Also, i’m really enjoying this conversation:beer:

  20. Gravatar Pam Says

I don’t know if this has already been mentioned, but it seems like the biggest kicker is that the Africans enslaved their own people! The stronger African tribes captured other African tribes and then sold them to the Dutch and Portuguese. If you want to blame people for the enslavement of a people, be sure of your sources. We “white folk” in America had no say whatsoever in the actual enslavement of Africans. Yes, we did keep them in slavery for years after, but the whole “The white man enslaved us and made us who we are today” idea is null and void, if not for sheer sociological development then for simple fact.

Now, some will say that the African chieftans had no idea what they were subjecting these people to. I, however, know human nature enough to say that that’s pure BS. Greed, plain and simple, was the driving force in the slave trade. You may sugar-coat it and call it “desire to develop our economy,” but it’s still greed. Greed of the Africans to make a buck where they could, greed of the settlers trying to make a better life through exploitation of this on-hand resource, and greed of the slave traders delivering their valuable commodity.

Not exactly relevant to this particular thread of conversation, but something to keep in mind. I live in the south, and the white vs. black struggle is still going on to this day. This is a rather touchy subject, as I’ve seen very fair, unbiased citizens accused by black people of prejudice. But that’s a major soap-box. Let me know if you want to hear more.

  21. Gravatar me Says

Im not talking about amount of money, Im talking about them not going out and making an honest living. Plenty of people dont make a lot of money, plenty of white people too, but most of them dont go cryin to the government.

  22. Gravatar me Says

And believe me on this one, if you have the will to get a job, there is a place somewhere that will hire you, it might not be the highest paying in the world but believe it or not you can make a living off of it. Liberalism is the daunting fear that someone, somewhere just might be able to help themself.

  23. Gravatar Young Gifted and Black Says

Pam You’re a racist! just look at your own words. “Africans wanted to make a buck but your good Christian “White folk” wanted a better life” most White people see Their race through rose-coloured glasses. What every White people have done or even do today, no mater how immoral, it is interpreted as making the world a better place. Not for everyone Just white people.

Many of you just don’t get it. It’s a human rights issue as well as economics.

Ask any family who had a loved one murdered or violently attacked. They just want justice. They want the Perp confined and they want to be compensated for their pain and suffering. Ask the Goldman family why did they sue O.J. Why don’t they “just get over it?” Ask the Jewish people to get over Egyptian slavery and the Holocaust and leave it to the history books.

The history books we study from are not factual. They are mere propaganda for White folk reality.

There is no statute of limitation on murder, kidnapping or rape. And any one who profits or benefits from those acts is just as duplicitous, guilty and accountable.

The truth is that the North American slave trade was far worst that ever portrayed in history books or movies.

  24. Gravatar JJ Says

Dude, quit sippin the hater-ade (as Chad calls it).

  25. Gravatar Whatever Says

Boy, I’d forgotten about this little thread.

Pam - As with Native American argument further up the page, you are trying to use a separate issue to excuse slavery. The fact that the Africans enslaved each other too does not make the American enslavement any less heinous.

So much for American values - if the other guys are enslaving and torturing people, we might as well do it too, right? The “everybody’s doing it” argument doesn’t work.

Me - most black people don’t go crying to the government, either. most of them are too busy trying to help themselves.

I was almost about to go see CSA, but I first looked up the trailer on the internet. I soon found out it was a spike lee film and was appaled. I strongly urge everyone not to support this film by going to see it in the theater. I will download it later on and watch it for amusment puropses and see what trash it really is.
