Maybe if they weren’t, they could spread alarmist “news” about the growth of radical Islam, which like the growth of fundamentalist Christianity in the US, is merely a reaction to the perceived moral depravity and injustice of secular western society, implying that the developing culture divide is a precursor to global religious war, and thus helping us all to reconcile our differences is a peaceful and sensible fashion. The last thing we want is for the participants on both sides to realize that while they are different, in a lot of important ways, they are the same.

Because having an apocalyptic holy war to fight is a great way to make us all feel important, and so much fun besides.

Just as the radical Islamists are reacting to what they perceive to be a society that has lost its moral bearing, more moderate elements within the Islamic community will eventually react and reject the fascist assholes. Back and forth we go. I’m not saying this isn’t bad - it’s pretty damn bad, and a lot of people are gonna die over this, and many more will suffer for it, but it’s happened before, and it’s not the end of the world. more than ever, cooler heads need to prevail so that we can stop freaking out, and figure out the right combination of policies to keep these morons from making their problems our problem.
