Is Waterboarding Torture?

11.30.2007

This is a bit of an issue right now, as the latest nominee’s are faced with the question. John McCain and Mitt Romney got into it during the youtube debates.

Waterboarding is a form of torture which consists of immobilizing an individual and pouring water over his or her face to simulate drowning. Waterboarding has been used to obtain information, coerce confessions, and also to punish, and/or intimidate. It elicits the gag reflex, and can make the subject believe his or her death is imminent while not causing physical evidence of torture.

Although waterboarding in cases can leave no lasting physical damage, it carries the real risks of extreme pain, damage to the lungs, brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation, injuries as a result of struggling against restraints (including broken bones), and even death.

I would have to say that waterboarding is torture. It’s not so much physical, as it is psychological.

Do you oppose the use of waterboarding on suspected terrorists?

Not at all. We are at war, and war is hell. If we can save the lives of several people through the psychological torture of a suspect, then let us do it.

What if he’s not a terrorist, and we just tortured a innocent civilian?

If we can save the lives of several people through the psychological torture of a suspect who turns up innocent, then he can just take one for the team. Collateral damage happens, and we do our best to minimize it. During chemotherapy, a lot of the good cells get killed while the cancer is being killed. It’s one of the travesties of reality. Nobody likes it, but it needs to be done.

McCain is a former P.O.W. and knows more about it than you, so how can you disagree with him?

I think think McCain’s opinion on it might be hindered by his personal experience. As he was tortured by a corrupt regime who was working to force him to lie, AND using horrible technique’s… I refuse to compare waterboarding to the treatment that McCain received. As I know that we are not torturing suspects to make them confess war crimes etc.

I think McCain is a hero and a patriot for his service and sacrifice and I will never let anyone say otherwise. I just don’t think McCain has what it takes to run the world.

Rodney King Shot, Black People Riot

11.29.2007

Well… no riots. But why not? It’s Rodney King!

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Southern California police said 1991 police beating victim Rodney King has been shot, but the wounds are not life-threatening.

Rialto police Sgt. Don Lewis told the Riverside Press-Enterprise that King was hit in the face and arm by shotgun pellets on a San Bernardino street corner Wednesday night. He bicycled to his home in Rialto to call police and was taken to a hospital.

Police said when they arrived at the home, King and others there appeared drunk and few were cooperative in providing information.

San Bernardino police Lt. Scott Paterson tells the San Bernardino County Sun that the shooting may have involved a domestic dispute.

King was beaten by Los Angeles police in 1991 and the officers’ subsequent acquittal on criminal charges sparked deadly rioting in 1992.

Supreme Court To Hear DC Gun Ban Case

11.20.2007

DC Gun Ban

The Supreme Court announced today that it will decide whether the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns violates the Constitution, a choice that will put the justices at the center of the controversy over the meaning of the Second Amendment for the first time in nearly 70 years.

The court’s decision could have broad implications for gun-control measures locally and across the country, and will raise a hotly contested political issue just in time for the 2008 elections.

The court will hear the case after the first of the year. A decision likely would come before it adjourns at the end of June.

For years, legal scholars, historians and grammarians have debated the meaning of the amendment because of its enigmatic wording and odd punctuation:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Read the rest of this entry »

Latest Hunting

About a week ago, Jonas took himself a nice 9 point whitetail. He was watching a power line clearing one day after work, and out he stepped.

I helped him gut it and bring it home. Unfortunately I didn’t have my Nikon D50, so I wasn’t able to get any good photos.

Ryan and I sat out in the Wolf Lodge tree stand this morning. We got out there at dark 30, sat and watched. It’s late in the season, so we’d both be happy with a doe fawn at this point.

About an hour into it, a big doe steps out good and broadside. She was about 60 yards away when I stopped her, and told Ryan to take the shot. It cleared her back by an inch or so. She ran off, and sounded the alarm. Ryan didn’t calculate the rise in the bullet at that distance, plus the rise in the bullet from shooting down.

I wish I had my digital camera rolling. It woulda been good to ruffle his feathers. Anyways, I’m so “fortunate” that I get to miss a week of hunting season to spend it down in San Diego, Mexifornia. Too bad there wasn’t a season for border jumpers. Maybe there will be if Ron Paul gets elected. So I’ll be down there from this Saturday till the next. We’ll see what happens.

There’s gotta be an age limit, or awareness test given to older folks in order to remain driving. It was a close call for this smokey.

Improper Shotgun Use

11.14.2007
SOUTHWORTH, Wash. (AP) — A man trying to loosen a stubborn lug nut blasted the wheel with a 12-gauge shotgun, injuring himself badly in both legs, sheriff’s deputies said.

The 66-year-old man had been repairing a Lincoln Continental for two weeks at his home northwest of Southworth, about 10 miles southwest of Seattle, and had gotten all but one of the lug nuts off the right rear wheel by Saturday afternoon, Kitsap County Deputy Scott Wilson said.

“He’s bound and determined to get that lug nut off,” Wilson said.

From about arm’s length, the man fired the shotgun at the wheel and was “peppered” in both legs with buckshot and debris, with some injuries as high as his chin, according to a sheriff’s office report.

“Nobody else was there and he wasn’t intoxicated,” Wilson said.

The man was taken to Tacoma General Hospital with injuries Wilson described as severe but not life-threatening.

I’m pretty sure the guy should have read the warning label on his shotgun that said “Do not use to remove lug nuts”. I know all my guns have that label, which is why I’ve never used them for that task, needless to say the thought has crossed my mind.

I really don’t see anything wrong with this. Why is a dolphin any different than Tuna? Or any other animal?

And the “veteran” said “It’s hard to believe that this is taking place in this time”. Uh… no it’s not. This has been taking place since the dawn of the fishing boat.

And as for the “heroes” girl… celebrity activism? now thats entertainment.

Ontario man killed in wolf attack

11.06.2007

First documented case in North America of a healthy wolf killing a human in the wild

A coroner’s jury in Saskatchewan has determined that Ontario university student Kenton Carnegie was killed in a wolf attack.

Carnegie was 22 when he died in November 2005 near Points North Landing, Sask. On a work term for a company at the mining exploration camp, located about 750 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, Carnegie went for a walk and didn’t come back.

Searchers later found his body surrounded by wolves.

Witnesses told the inquest that wild animals had been feeding at an unregulated garbage dump. Concerns were expressed that wolves in the area had lost their natural fear of humans.

Paul Paquet, an expert on wolf biology who studied the case for the coroner’s office, told the inquest earlier in the week that it was more likely that a black bear killed Carnegie, although a wolf attack was also a possibility.

He said he based his findings on all the evidence, including the way the body had been consumed and moved around.

But his evidence didn’t jibe with what people on the scene observed. No one reported seeing a bear in the area.

Another wolf expert, Mark McNay, who had studied the case for Carnegie’s family, told the jury he was convinced it was a wolf attack.

The jury’s finding is significant, because there are no documented cases in North America of a healthy wolf killing a human in the wild.

The jury made a series of recommendations on how to prevent similar incidents. Among them is a requirement for the Saskatchewan Environment Department to provide proper fencing and supervision at all landfills where there are known to be wildlife feeding.
