Is Waterboarding Torture?
11.30.07This is a bit of an issue right now, as the latest nominee’s are faced with the question. John McCain and Mitt Romney got into it during the youtube debates.
Waterboarding is a form of torture which consists of immobilizing an individual and pouring water over his or her face to simulate drowning. Waterboarding has been used to obtain information, coerce confessions, and also to punish, and/or intimidate. It elicits the gag reflex, and can make the subject believe his or her death is imminent while not causing physical evidence of torture.
Although waterboarding in cases can leave no lasting physical damage, it carries the real risks of extreme pain, damage to the lungs, brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation, injuries as a result of struggling against restraints (including broken bones), and even death.

I would have to say that waterboarding is torture. It’s not so much physical, as it is psychological.
Do you oppose the use of waterboarding on suspected terrorists?
Not at all. We are at war, and war is hell. If we can save the lives of several people through the psychological torture of a suspect, then let us do it.
What if he’s not a terrorist, and we just tortured a innocent civilian?
If we can save the lives of several people through the psychological torture of a suspect who turns up innocent, then he can just take one for the team. Collateral damage happens, and we do our best to minimize it. During chemotherapy, a lot of the good cells get killed while the cancer is being killed. It’s one of the travesties of reality. Nobody likes it, but it needs to be done.
McCain is a former P.O.W. and knows more about it than you, so how can you disagree with him?
I think think McCain’s opinion on it might be hindered by his personal experience. As he was tortured by a corrupt regime who was working to force him to lie, AND using horrible technique’s… I refuse to compare waterboarding to the treatment that McCain received. As I know that we are not torturing suspects to make them confess war crimes etc.
I think McCain is a hero and a patriot for his service and sacrifice and I will never let anyone say otherwise. I just don’t think McCain has what it takes to run the world.

Water boarding is only torture unless the Libs think they can side with America’s enemies and can gain politically.
