S&W Survival Kit

07.28.2006

This is definetly what you what you want to pack around in bear country. A buddy down in Florida sent me this info.

Smith & Wesson has assembled an “Emergency Survival Tool Kit” that revolves around their 460PD or 500PD revolvers, it is available with either. S&W’s Herb Belin, who developed this kit, emphasizes the short and very powerful .460 S&W and .500 S&W Magnum handguns as defense against bears. The idea of the snub nose is that it allows easy use even if attacked while in your sleeping bag in a tent, according to Herb. A longer barrel would make it more difficult to use in such a confined place and at point blank range, accuracy isn’t that much of an issue. That’s not an unheard of occurance, so he has a point.

The revolvers is equipped with a 2.75 inch unported barrel and a bright yellow Hogue Recoil Reducing Grip. Unless they are truly magic, best be prepared for a very sore hand after firing this one on the range. Anyone with a weak grip need not apply.

S&W Survival Kit

The remainder of the kit includes: an Ultimate Survival Blastmatch firestarter and four packages of WetFire tinder, Ultimate Survival Saber Saw, Jet Scream whistle and 2 x 3 StarFlash signal mirror, a Silva Polaris baseplate compass, two MPI Mylar Space Emergency Blankets (Note to Herb, see above article) and a Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops liner lock folding knife. Also included is the book, “Bear Attacks of the Century - True Stories of Courage and Survival” by Larry Mueller and Marguerite Reiss; just in case you weren’t paranoid enough about bears. All this is packed into a fitted bright yellow Harddig Storm Case. A ballistic nylon holster for the revolver is included. MSRP is $1150.

S&W Survival Kit 02

How practical is this kit? Well, individually, the componets are generally very good and ought to be carried on your person for use if needed. If you are traveling into bear country, a powerful firearm is advisable. While a rifle or shotgun with slugs is preferred, most of those we know that travel in such areas also carry a powerful handgun and you’d be hard pressed to find one more powerful than these two.

Bond Arms Texas Defender

01.19.2006

Precision engineered by Bond Arms, a leader in innovative derringer production and design, the Texas Defender truly represents the finest in compact double-barrel protection. Stainless steel construction with a satin polished finish combine with custom laminated rosewood or black ash grips for stunning good looks. A unique interchangeable barrel system lets you conveniently use different barrels on the same frame. Each barrel will fire two different calibers. A spring-loaded cammed locking lever ensures a tight barrel-to-frame fit and quick, convenient loading and unloading. Rebounding hammers join with retracting firing pins and a crossbolt safety for sure, safe reliability.

I think I’d have to go with the Cowboy Defender model in .45 Colt, and a .410 buckshot. I’m real partial to the star in the grip, here’s a lower quality graphic. I dunno why their website designer made all the images in .gif. But imagine having this thing engraved. Lookin’ pretty sweet.

Idaho Entegrated Breaching Shotgun

10.20.2004

Look what Idaho came out with! The Idaho Entegrated Breaching Shotgun!

Idaho Entegrated Breaching Shotgun

A traditional entry method requires a shotgun to breach doors. In the standard process, the shooter fires at the door to destroy the hinges or the lock and then either has to switch from the shotgun to an assault rifle or remove himself from the line of fire to allow others to proceed through the door. Either way, the loss of precious seconds could result in undesirable consequences.

So you slap that 12 guage shotty on the bottom of your M-4, and yer set?? It doesnt mention if its an add-on, or if there is more work put into the receiver. But from the picture, it looks like you just pump it and go. If anyone knows more on this baby, drop me a line.

Discussions are already underway with a gun manufacturer interested in producing and marketing the integrated breaching shotgun.

According to Watson, being involved in the project was even more exciting due to one fact, “It was cool to work with guns and get paid for it!”

Amen to that. Working with guns and getting paid for it! If only there was more of a demand for such an industry. There sure as heck should be. Whats wrong with people these days??
